Stainless steel crowns (SSCs) and bands are widely used in pediatric dentistry; however, their impact on periodontal and gingival health requires evaluation. This study aimed to compare the effects of SSCs and bands on Gingival Index (GI), Plaque Index (PI), and Probing Pocket Depth (PPD) over 6 months.
Sixty children aged 6-12 years were divided into two groups: SSCs (n = 30) and bands (n = 30). Clinical parameters were recorded at baseline, 1, 3, and 6 months.
The results revealed a progressive increase in GI, PI, and PPD values for both groups, with bands showing higher mean values (e.g., GI: 2.03 ± 0.53 vs. 1.89 ± 0.57 at 6 months), indicating greater gingival inflammation and plaque accumulation. The differences were statistically significant ( < 0.05).
These findings highlight the importance of proper placement, maintenance, and hygiene education to mitigate periodontal risks. Stainless steel bands were found to have a slightly greater impact compared with crowns, necessitating careful consideration in clinical practice.
