Electrodiagnostic studies (including nerve conduction studies and electromyography) are the most common diagnostic tests utilized in entrapment and traumatic neuropathies, including carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndromes. Electrodiagnostic studies evaluate the function of the nerves and give essential information about the location and severity of the lesion, but they provide little information about the structure of the nerve or any other structural abnormalities that may be contributing to the cause of the neuropathy. With improving technology, ultrasound has been increasingly used to image nerves and muscles. Due to its accessibility and portability, ultrasound has been integrated into electrodiagnostic laboratories and equipment, allowing for additional structural information to be obtained, which can alter management and improve patient outcomes.
