Obsessional defenses require a confronting, active therapist in order to break through the intellectualized, ritualized, and highly distracting productions of the patients. The tendency to obfuscate through details and rigid adherence to the instructions demands a loose, flexible, and direct interaction from a therapist who is not too obessional and willing to forego his own perfectionistic expectations from therapy.
