Abstract

Carbon monoxide is extracted along with other blood gases, in a plexiglass syringe, at room temperature, by vacuum in the presence of phosphoric acid. The gases liberated are transferred to another plexiglass syringe where they are diluted with air. The carbon monoxide content of this gazeous mixture is determined by infrared spectrometry. This simple and rapid extraction procedure provides reliable results and is performed with robust equipment which is easy to clean and maintain.
