Interpositional bone grafts to augment the atrophic mandible.

Interpositional or inlay bone grafts have been shown to resorb more slowly than onlay-type grafts. The visor-osteotomy provides an improved mandibular denture-bearing area. New dentures fabricated postsurgically have been routinely successful. Major disadvantages are that the patient will be unable to wear a mandibular denture during the entire healing phase and permanently altered sensation of the mental nerve will usually occur.
