Research on the effects of institutionalization and on observation of care practices has yielded inconsistent, correlational findings and has not adequately provided analyses of social interaction in residences and its consequences on the well being and development of residents. Social psychological and organizational behavioral research suggest alternative ways to manage residences and to structure peer interaction. The dynamics and consequences of these alternatives were outlined.
