Brain abscess were produced in cats, by inoculating an agar-bouillon mixture with Staphylococcus aureus into the white matter of the right cerebral hemisphere. The accompanying oedema, which can be regarded as vasogenic, extended outwards from the site of inflammation and by the seventh day had involved the entire right hemisphere. As the abscess became encapsulated the oedema at the periphery subsided but it persisted, however, in the close proximity of the causative organisms to the tissue. The changes in the regional brain metabolism were most obvious at the time when the oedema was maximal. This tended to become normal with the increasing encapsulating which took place from the seventh day onwards.
