A dangerous domino?

As Los Angeles County--USC Medical Center hovered on the brink of closure this summer, one of the nation's largest hospitals was far from alone in its woes. In fact, a number of public hospitals--and the communities they serve--are in trouble in an era of tightened managed care payments, Medicaid budget woes and swelling uninsured populations.
