The widespread use of fluoride containing toothpastes is recognised s being a major factor in the declining caries experience in the industrialised world. The implications of continuing research in relation to advice given to patients is discussed. It is the opinion of the author that general dental practitioners need to be fully updated in knowledge of clinical results, as part of their duty of care.
