Magnetic resonance angiograms derive their name from their apparent similarity in appearance with conventional X-ray contrast angiograms, but the mechanisms of image production are vastly different. This article aims to provide the reader with an understanding of the basic physical principles, the current and potential clinical applications, and the projected future advances in image quality of magnetic resonance angiograms.
