The progress of microsurgery allows microvascular tissue transfer to the maxilla and the midface. Since 1987, 23 patients have been treated in that way at the department of maxillofacial surgery in Graz, Austria. The indications were tumors, atrophy of the maxilla, maxillary defects in cleft patients and a gun shot injury. The success rate was 61% about. The most important advantages are the few operations needed, the tissue transfer over long distances and the bone transplantations with enossal implants for prosthetic rehabilitation.
