Astrocytes are one of the main target cells for pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide in the central nervous system. Astrocytes are very heterogeneous regarding both basal movement of intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) and the [Ca2+]i response to PACAP at a single cell level.
