Neonatal Netw. 1997 Sep;16(6):67-8.
It is the position of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses that in order for the neonate's specialized needs to be met in this era of early discharge, broad guidelines must exist for such discharge. Discharge preparations and follow-up care must be performed by knowledgeable and experienced neonatal registered nurses who can determine readiness for discharge and home care needs. Early discharge may be appropriate and safe if all discharge and teaching criteria are met to assure positive neonatal and family outcomes.
