Abstract
In 1986 Laurence Peterken, who had not previously worked in the health service, was appointed general manager of Greater Glasgow Health Board. He has had a great impact on Glasgow's health services. The trade unions accuse him of butchering the service, the doctors accuse him of acting like God and MPs accuse him of privatising the NHS. He sees things rather differently.
