Decommissioning a hospital is not an every day management task, but as the health service endeavours to make better use of its estate it is likely to face more managers. St Stephen's Hospital, Chelsea, was recently decommissioned to make way for a new teaching hospital, and Tim Battle and Lynne Clemence offer a checklist based on the experience.
