This article discusses the basis for providing family-centered services in neonatal intensive care. It is suggested that these services should be developed within the following parameters: adaptive fit, response to family identified needs, family empowerment and independence, and the recognition that families are complex dynamic systems. Physical and organizational changes necessary for the implementation of family-centered neonatal intensive care services are discussed.
