On December 1, 1991, the federal Patient Self-Determination Act became effective. The Act's purpose is to ensure that a patient's right to direct his or her own health care decision making is maintained. This article discusses the requirements of the Act, summarizes the interim rules promulgated to implement the Act's provisions, and assesses the soundness of the Act.
