In the attempt to introduce product standardization, many materiel managers fail to take stock of the forces that work against its success. Personal attitudes of clinical staff and others favoring freedom, individualism and decisions based on patient care rather than the bottom line, must be considered if product standardization is to take hold. It is also the responsibility of hospital administration to acknowledge product standards as part of the overall mission of the hospital. Product standardization that takes a more interpersonal perspective can succeed.
