Developments in health care information systems are being driven by the changing health care market environment as well as the availability of enhanced communication and computer technologies. These developments represent basic shifts in traditional paradigms on which provider information systems are based. The ultimate success of providers will depend on their making fundamental changes in the use of information systems to support new and evolving incentive systems, organizational structures, and market expectations.
