Nursing home providers, especially the large chains, are responding to calls for improved services for people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementia-related disorders by developing special-care units. While Alzheimer's programs have been in existence since the mid-1980s, the rising number of seniors who have the disease and their families' demands for quality long-term-care programs have resulted in rapid growth.
