In an effort to make pharmacy a more patient oriented health profession, pharmacy students at the University of Pittsburgh are required to take a course entitled, Social Sciences in Pharmacy. Besides drawing from the diverse social and behavioral sciences this course also includes material from the field of social work. This article describes the course and the students' reactions to it. It also provides an overview of some of the recent trends in the field and suggests areas where consultation between pharmacist and social worker may be indicated.
