This new irrigation-aspiration system (Fig 9) demonstrates application of basic physical principles to a particular medical problem, maintaining the integrity of the anterior chamber during aspiration of cataractous material. This system is readily incorporated into the standard procedure of irrigation-aspiration of soft cataractous material at relatively low cost. The surgical procedure and the operation of this system with irrigation-aspiration and "prevent-collapse" components are under direct control of the physician.
