The influence of a bilateral vagotomy on the acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) in the neurons of the bulbous part of the reticular formation of albino rats was investigated. An increase in the reaction to acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was ascertained in the large as well as the small neurons 8 h after the transection of the vagus nerves, which indicates their decreased activity. It may be assumed that a bilateral vagotomy causes a decrease in the activity of cholinergic mechanisms within the periphery of the reticular formation neurons.
