The Louisiana State Medical Society Committee on Medical Education is charged with acting as a resource for information regarding the requirements of hospitals, organizations, and medical care providers on postgraduate medical education opportunities. As of June 1998, 32 states required continuing medical education (CME) credits for renewal of physician licenses. The average number of hours required is 30 with a range from 12 to 50 per year. Louisiana does not require CME credits for re-licensure, but relies on voluntary acquisition of CME credits by its physicians. However, in the 1998 LSMS all-member survey, 70% of respondents answered yes to the question, "Do you think there should be a minimum CME requirement for re-licensure of physicians in Louisiana?"
