How can the board ensure that appropriate bioethical policies are established and maintained within its institution? The author examines the ethical concerns that deserve special consideration by trustees: protecting the patient's right of self-determination; minimizing the need for judicial intervention; and ensuring that the hospital examines and reviews the ethical issues that are most relevant to patients, staff members, and the community.
