A case for generic social work in health settings.

The need for generic social work in health settings and the importance of role definition is examined in this article. A practical application of such a role definition, in regard to discharge planning, is described. The effect of a generic definition on the structuring of social service systems and on clinical practice is hypothesized, and a rationale for generic social work, both for the clinician and for the administrator, is presented.
