The Professional Standards Review Organization (PSRO) program has affected most hospital-related physicians in some way. Although historically reluctant to judge their peers, physicians are now acknowledging society's right to quality assurance in medical care and their own responsibility in monitoring the profession. PSROs, while creating arenas for physician conflict, also allow physicians a loud political voice.
