No hospital wants to give up control of its present services. In fact, healthcare competition dictates that if one community hospital has an MRI, then hospitals in the same community will buy the same machine to maintain market share. The public no longer agrees with this philosophy and will dictate by present and future public policies the method by which such services will be controlled. The future requires a flexible program to meet the challenges of Medicare regulations and provide a free-market basis for laboratory services.
