The doctrine of informed consent lies at the very core of the interaction between medicine and law. Traditionally viewed as an issue of legal liability, it has implications far beyond the legal arena. It embodies cultural beliefs in the autonomy of the individual. Properly applied, it can improve the quality of care that physician assistants give to their patients.
