Earlier this year, about half of Ontario's 222 hospitals faced a funding crisis. In the spring, Ontario's treasurer read the riot act: the province wouldn't bail out hospitals with deficits. It was the first time any Ontario government followed through on its commitment to slash hospital costs. A recent report based on 23 operational reviews concluded in part that to control costs, hospitals must "realign, reduce, cap or eliminate certain services and programs."
