Recent legislative enactments whose goal is control of hospital decision making are diminishing the governing board's traditional responsibility for the hospital's future. Trustees can resist this erosion of their authority by working with government to ensure that the health planning system is as effective as possible. This new political function could well become the trustee's most important role.
