This article reviews the experience with a system of unit dose distribution to locked medication drawers located in each individual patient's room on two floors of a large community hospital. Two "patient server" configurations are described, one on a general medical-surgical floor and one on a critical care floor. The advantages and disadvantages of this system are compared with those associated with the use of unit dose medication carts.
