A month or two back widespread interest was evoked by publication in The Sunday Times of some calculations by Steven Haberman, senior lecturer in actuarial science at the City University. These showed that heart transplants fell not into the category of conspicuous medical consumption, but into that of sound economic investment. Mr. Haberman has now reworked his figures for the Journal, taking account of more detailed and authoritative information than was then available. Using the technique of cost-benefit analysis, he shows that--apart from any humanitarian considerations--heart transplants actually save the country money.
