In mid-1986, a survey was conducted of AAMD hospital-based members to determine the degree to which hospitals had instituted smoking policies and the kinds of policies that were being used. A questionnaire was sent to approximately 700 members; 258 usable replies were returned. The results indicate that the overwhelming majority of hospitals have policies aimed at discouraging the smoking habit among employees, patients, medical staff members, and visitors.
