At its 1980 annual meeting, the AMA revised its "Principles of Medical Ethics" to achieve a more contemporary stance between professional principles and social reality; it gave its approval, although qualified, to HMOs; it elected to negotiate with the appropriate organizations to establish a single nationwide accrediting body for continuing medical education; and it adopted a draft document on the categorization of hospital emergency capabilities.
