A three-phase investigation was conducted to learn more about the suspension mechanism of the temporomandibular joint with the aid of radiographs. Results indicate that superior condylar displacement occurs in most patients with unsupported closing muscle force and that condylar translation occurs during hinge opening for some patients. This study revealed that the condylar mechanism is not immutable. The superior condylar displacement produced by unsupported muscle force raises doubts about the whole understanding of the suspension mechanism of the temporomandibular joint and the clinical techniques associated with it.
