Ask the doctor. I'm a 42-year-old man with no health problems, except for the fact that I'm a bit overweight. I recently had an exercise test because of some chest pain. During a period of extreme heat this summer, my ankles were more swollen than usual, and my weight jumped three pounds in just two days. I take a blood thinner daily. Before year's end, I'm scheduled to have a couple of teeth pulled. My dentist wants me to stop my medicine a day or two beforehand so that there won't be too much bleeding, but a friend says her doctor told her not to stop the medication ahead of time. Ask the doctor. In October 2007, I had three Cypher stents placed in my left anterior descending artery. My doctor told me to take Plavix and aspirin indefinitely. Now I need to have a hernia repaired. My surgeon refuses to operate while I'm taking Plavix and aspirin, and said I would have to stop taking the two drugs five to six days before the operation. My cardiologist says that stopping the Plavix and aspirin, as well as the stress of the operation itself, would throw me into a "hypercoagulable state," greatly increasing my chance of developing a blood clot inside one of the stents.
