The lateral supporting area should measure at least 22 mm on the average. This value should be corroborated by the use of any available radiographs and consideration of the width of permanent teeth that have already erupted, and sex-specific differences. All means for retaining teeth should be used to prevent a premature collapse of the supporting area.
