[Hematuria and proteinuria--old names, new horizons].

Gradually advanced diagnostic standards for the analysis of urine specimens during the last years led to improved clinical arguments providing important clues. Unnecessary diagnostic procedures like IVP or cytoscopy in suspected glomerular hematuria may for instance be prevented, the patients comfort enhanced and costs reduced. A possible diagnostic algorithm in a case with suspected urologic pathology is shown.
