On call. My 59-year-old husband just came home after being hospitalized for a mild heart attack. He was only in the hospital for five days and he feels great, though he does have to take three prescription medicines plus aspirin. I'm writing because my husband 's doctor doesn't want him to go back to work for another six weeks even though his job doesn't involve any lifting. I think the stress of staying home would be worse that going to work. Please advise.

On call. I am 66 years old and have had angina for nearly 5 years. I take aspirin and Zocor, but I haven't needed nitroglycerin for at least 3 years, even though I ride my bike quite hard at least 4 days a week. I've started having trouble with my erections, and now I want to try Viagra. My doctor gave me a prescription, but my wife won't let me fill it. On call. I developed severe ulcerative colitis in my late teens, and I had my entire colon and rectum removed at age 24. It was certainly worthwhile, since I adjusted easily and I've been healthy ever since. But now I'm 52, and I'm starting to think about prostate cancer. My doctor obviously can't do a rectal exam, and he doesn't want to do a PSA test because he says he won't be able to send me for a prostate biopsy if the test is high. Ask the doctor. A heart attack caused me to develop heart rhythm problems. These made it necessary for me to get an implantable cardioventer/defibrillator (ICD) that can shock my heart back to a normal rhythm. My medical story is a lot like Vice President Dick Cheney's, but my social situation isn't--I don't have anyone to drive me around. My doctor doesn't want me to drive. But depending on friends and family is a major problem, and we don't live near public transportation. I had an ultrasound of my heart recently, and the technician performing it wouldn't tell me anything about what he saw. He said I would have to wait for my doctor to call me. It's been two days now, and I'm still waiting. Don't you think patients should be able to get a least some preliminary information sooner? Except for high cholesterol, I've always been pretty healthy for my age (72). But I recently started puffing on the stairs, so my doctor sent me for a set of tests. After the echocardiogram, he told me I had congestive heart failure. He gave me Lasix and I feel much better. But now he wants me to take at least three other pills every day. On call. When I saw my doctor on my 73rd birthday, my only complaint was that I've been having trouble with my erections over the past year. I was surprised that my doctor didn't do any blood tests beyond the usual battery, and he didn't refer me to a specialist. Instead, he gave me a prescription for Viagra. By the way, doctor. For years, I've been taking the same dose of Synthroid for hypothyroidism, and recent tests place me in the normal range. However, I still have several symptoms of low thyroid--fatigue, difficulty losing weight, sensitivity to cold, and constipation. My doctor doesn't seem concerned with the symptoms, as long as my blood tests are normal. But I'm frustrated. Is there anything I can do?

Ask the doctor: I take a water pill for swelling of my legs. My doctor tells me to put my feet up to help the fluid drain, but he also tells me to be active and walk around, which of course requires putting my feet down.
