The development of a transitional care ward at Peterborough Maternity Unit has improved the care given to all women and their babies. A slight reorganisation of services has resulted in a better working environment for everyone. Babies requiring additional care receive timely and appropriate attention and mothers whose babies are in NICU are able to support each other at this emotional and stressful time. With such clear benefits for everyone, I recommend that all maternity units consider developing a transitional care ward.
