The importance of the dissemination of scientific and clinical advances brought about by the early international dental congresses cannot be underestimated. The congresses in 1889, 1893, 1900 and 1909 set the pattern for discussion and association for the rest of the twentieth and, now, the beginning of the twenty-first century.
