In this review we set up the indications of treatment of vascular malformations (arteriovenous malformations, arteriovenous fistulas and cavernous angiomas), brain tumors (meningiomas, neurinomas, pituitary adenomas, craneofaryngiomas, metastases, gliomas, chondromas, craniopharingiomas and hemangioblastomas) with stereotaxic radiosurgery, and the application of this technique to functional neurosurgery. We assess the limitations of stereotaxic radiosurgery, basically those regarding to volume, proximity to critical anatomical structures and radiosensibility. The review of the literature has allowed us making an approach on efficacy and complications of what with no-doubts we consider an excellent therapeutic alternative.
