A technique for the prevention of esophageal reflux has been studied in dogs and successfully applied to two patients. It consists of stripping the distal 2 to 3 cm. of the esophagus of its musculature and then closing the muscular gap, thus infolding the mucosa of the denuded segment. Experimentally and clinically the mucosal valve thus formed has proved effective in preventing reflux without producing obstruction.
