Based on a careful preparation of the small saphenous vein during 218 operations in patients with venous varicosity of the lower extremities, studies of the observed topographic variants of the terminal portion of the small saphenous vein, and observations over 48 patients with postoperative recurrent varices, it is concluded that the surgical anatomy of the terminal portion of the vein involved is characterized by a multitude of topographic variants, the knowledge of which facilitates the task of a surgeon in phlebectomy for varicosity and the postthrombophlebitic syndrome.
