The Preliminary Training School (PTS) for nurses which opened at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1893 was the first attempt to provide a theoretical pre-clinical course for 'pupil' nurses. The notebooks of two pupils are reviewed in terms of the contemporary medical and nursing knowledge and provide indications of subject matter that pupil nurses were taught.
