Uniforms for nurses have been of prevailing significance since the inception of nurse training in this country. Indeed the uniform may be considered a metaphor for the reform that was instituted, both of care-givers and care provision for the sick and disabled of colonial Australia and subsequently. There are nuances and ambiguities in references to nursing and nursing attire, and historical research and historiography has begun to explicate such complexities.
