Alide Grutterink (1869-1927) qualified as a pharmacist in 1890. She was the third woman to do so since the 1865 Medical Laws had made it possible for women to make a pharmaceutical career. In 1892 Grutterink was appointed hospital pharmacist in the Coolsingel hospital in Rotterdam. In her work she did extremely well, and in close cooperation with the medical staff she contributed to the progress of clinical analysis. In the meantime she studied micro-analysis with Professor H. Behrens at Delft. In 1910 Grutterink gained a PhD in this field. In the same year her appointment followed as an unsalaried university lecturer at Leiden University.
