The American 6th Army Group with General Devers in command to which the French 1st Army commanded by General de Lattre de Tassigny belonged, had been brought to a standstill in the Vosges during hard fights against strongly entrenched German troops. The French anaesthesists of the Army used the technique first worked out by British and American colleagues. In spite of numerous obstacles, surgery for multiples "poly-injuries" and especially reanimation led to unexpected progress in medical knowledge.
