In layer IV of the visual cortex of two primate species three small neurons were found that gave rise to short presynaptic somatic protrusions. The protrusions contained a cluster of predominantly round vesicles and established asymmetrical synaptic contacts with the characteristics of Gray's type 1 terminals.
